Hemodynamic Effects of Ouabain in Experimental Acute Coronary Embolism

Abstract
The effects of ouabain on hemodynamics in the closed-chest dogs with experimentally induced coronary embolization were studied. Coronary embolization was produced by the injection of microspheres of styene-di-vinyl benzene copolymer with the mean diameter of 325 microns into the aortic root through a double lumen catheter with an inflatable balloon. Ouabain was administered intravenously after the inductoin of coronary embolization and - the hemodynamic measurements were made by the right heart catheterization before and 15,30 and 60 minutes after ouabain injection.
It was found that hemodynamic derangements, namely decreases in femoral artery mean pressure, total peripheral resistance, femoral venous pressure, cardiac output and left ventricular work which were most pronounced 15 minutes after coronary embolization, were minimal or not observed in the group given ouabain. These data suggest that digitalis might have a place in the treatment and/or prophylaxis of acute circulatory alterations occuring in acute coronary occlusion, particularly in its early stage, even in the absence of overt congestive heart failure or shock.
